Equitable Education Models For Exceptional Students
Neurodivergent children get lost in the standardized public education shuffle because they need more personalized attention, structured learning environments, and faculty and staff who see and treat them as competent and able. Instead, this underestimated student population requires specialized training that honors the whole child, including their social and emotional well-being.
We refer to this approach as “presuming competence,” and it’s incredible to see how children bloom once they’re given the opportunity to shine.
Unfortunately, schools that offer this revolutionary approach require more funding than state taxes provide. That means that while some families can afford to send their neurodivergent or twice-exceptional child to private schools or hire private tutors at home, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars per year, many go without the resources necessary to ensure the highest quality education for them. As a result, children whose families cannot afford this level of support are left behind.
Here at the Bridge to Tomorrow foundation, we hold fast to the fact that every child, regardless of socioeconomic factors, deserves to realize their full potential and lead a fulfilling life.
When you donate to Bridge to Tomorrow, you donate autism scholarships that fill the gap. With these funds, children with autism and with other neurodivergent diagnoses can:
- Attend school in an environment that supports their sense of safety, calm, and confidence. By providing smaller classrooms and calm, safe spaces, children can be more centered and able to learn using outside input and positive reinforcement.
- Have personalized attention from faculty and staff who always presume competence. This means we assume our students have all kinds of gifts, talents, and abilities that haven’t been able to “shine” yet. Our job is to provide the accommodations necessary to let children express all the ways they are competent so they can thrive.
- Learn real-world daily life and independent living skills so they are confident in making their place in the world when they leave our program. This begins with positive routines and gradual independence at our partner school, Puzzle Box Academy, and ideally culminates in graduating from our partner upper-education school, Legacy High.
